Confronting the Climate Calamity

Updated: Oct 20, 2020

As a dental clinician, one struggles to keep up with the daily routine in the infirmary. There are plenty of things to prepare such as patient appointments, oral exam and diagnosis, master cards, case discussions, dental instruments, and grading sheets. So how can we drop everything, walk out, and go on strike like 16-year old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg?

Beyond the infirmary, is there life worth walking out for? One is too occupied to treat cases such as severe oral prophylaxis not realizing that the world is also experiencing severity in climate change. We restore our patient’s decayed teeth almost everyday yet we strain to exert ef- fort for our ecosystem’s restoration. We provide preventive measures for our patients not know- ing that the world at large also demands measures of the same nature.

Greta exclaimed at the UN summit: “We are in the beginning of mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!” For as long as world leaders fail to lift a finger and believe the science behind the climate emergency despite the existence of the Kyoto Protocol, she will continue to cut class and protest with mil- lions of young people walking along with her. People from different races, ages, and classes were moved by her message and are now engaging with her in the Global Climate Strike and Fridays for Future.

As a resident here on Earth, do you also lack the will to act for the environment and just passively rely everything to an equally passive government? Is climate strike just a hype or can it be translated into actions? Everyone is responsible for there’s no exception to climate action. We all suffer and if we can’t do anything about this, it would be too late for our world to recover and the only apology our future generation will receive is a lousy sorry. How are we going to take action? In our own simple ways we can begin by participating in the initiatives created by environmental organizations such as clean ups and tree planting efforts. We may also start the change in our personal lives through switching to sustainable alternatives.
